Initially named California Seals of the WHL (Western Hockey League from 1961 to 1967), the team joined the NHL in the 1967 expansion. The team was known as the Oakland Seals in it’s first 3 years, then in 1970 changed its name to the California Golden Seals. In 1976 the franchise moved to Cleveland, and became the Barons.
